The New York Sun Features John Thomas on MAGA’s Conditional Shift Toward Ukraine
Washington, D.C., August 1, 2026 — In a recent New York Sun feature, Nestpoint Managing Director John Thomas assessed the changing posture of some MAGA-aligned voices toward Ukraine and the strategic forces driving that recalibration.
The report examines Ukraine’s efforts to engage conservative commentators who have historically questioned American support for Kyiv. Recent visits, interviews, and firsthand exposure to the war have prompted several prominent voices to reconsider earlier views shaped partly by Russian messaging.
Thomas cautioned, however, that the shift should not be mistaken for a broader return to traditional interventionist foreign policy.
“Supporting Ukraine is increasingly framed less as open-ended nation-building and more as a way to bleed a hostile axis without committing American troops,” Thomas explained. “It’s still conditional and transactional but not a full embrace of the prior interventionist consensus.”
He also noted that the influence of individual personalities remains limited. Although figures such as Laura Loomer can shape discussion within parts of the online conservative ecosystem, Thomas said her change of position has not yet produced “a decisive realignment of the wider MAGA electorate.”
Instead, changing perceptions of Moscow appear to be playing a greater role. Russia’s relationships with Iran, China, and North Korea have made it more difficult for some conservatives to view the Kremlin as an isolated rival or potential counterweight to other threats.
“Russia’s alignment with Tehran, its willingness to supply Iran with advanced weaponry, and its role as a spoiler in the region have made Russia look less like a traditional great-power rival and more like part of an anti-Western axis,” Thomas said.
That calculation has strengthened the argument for constraining Russia even among conservatives who remain opposed to unlimited or open-ended funding for Ukraine.
Thomas applied the same distinction to President Donald Trump’s warmer public posture toward Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. He described the change as largely symbolic and tactical, reflecting Trump’s emphasis on leverage and negotiation rather than a fundamental conversion on Ukraine policy.
Taken together, the developments point to a change in how support for Ukraine is being presented to conservative audiences. The case is increasingly based on limiting the reach of a broader hostile coalition without deploying American troops—not on embracing the assumptions that defined earlier eras of U.S. foreign policy.
