Washington, D.C., November 1, 2026 — As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into political campaigns, questions about its impact on voters, campaign operations, and the economy are gaining attention ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. Republican political strategist Alex Olson joined Sky News to discuss these developments, along with President Donald Trump's efforts to mobilize Republican voters in the final days before Election Day.

Asked about Trump's strategy of encouraging voters to treat the midterms as though his own name were on the ballot, Olson argued that the president remains an important driver of Republican turnout, particularly among supporters who may not participate consistently in elections.

“Trump does drive the base out,” Olson said, adding that he believes the president is well-positioned to motivate Republican voters to cast their ballots.

Olson also expressed confidence in Republican prospects in traditionally conservative states such as Texas and Alaska.

The conversation then turned to artificial intelligence and its growing influence on campaign operations. Drawing on his experience with the adoption of peer-to-peer texting in earlier election cycles, Olson compared AI's rapid expansion to the way previously expensive campaign technologies became accessible to smaller political operations.

He noted that AI is allowing campaigns with limited resources, from school board contests to state legislative races, to automate tasks that would otherwise require additional staff.

“Political strategists often are slow to adopt, but AI is something that campaigns have realised they cannot live without,” Olson said.

Beyond campaign operations, the discussion addressed AI's emergence as a political issue, particularly as voters consider the potential effects of data centers, rising electricity costs, and changes in employment opportunities.

The interview highlighted the growing importance of addressing these economic concerns through public policy, rather than treating AI solely as a technological advancement or campaign messaging opportunity.

As political campaigns increasingly adopt AI, its role in elections is expanding beyond how candidates reach voters to the policy questions voters expect their representatives to address.
