Nestpoint's John Thomas Analyzes Key Senate Races Ahead of the Midterm Elections

Washington, D.C., October 25, 2026 — With the midterm elections approaching, competitive Senate races are putting renewed attention on candidate positioning, voter turnout, and economic concerns. During a recent Newsmax panel examining key battleground states, Nestpoint Managing Director and Republican political strategist John Thomas offered his assessment of the contests in Texas and Iowa and the factors that could influence their outcomes.
The discussion covered several closely watched Senate races, including Michigan, Maine, and Ohio, before turning to Texas, where Republican Ken Paxton faces Democrat James Talarico.
Thomas argued that Republicans have been working to define Talarico's political positions among voters who may be less familiar with him, while perceptions of Paxton are already more established. Despite the forecast favoring Talarico, Thomas said he believes the race is moving in Paxton's direction.
“I think it's a slight edge to Paxton, and thanks to President Trump getting out the GOP and MAGA base, I think Paxton pulls this one out,” Thomas said.
The conversation later shifted to Iowa, where Republican Ashley Hinson and Democrat Josh Turek are competing in another closely watched Senate race. Asked which issues could influence the outcome, Thomas pointed to everyday economic pressures that continue to resonate with voters.
“It's the cost of gas, diesel pricing. It's affordability,” Thomas said.
He also suggested that President Trump's renewed focus on economic messaging during the final stretch of the campaign could benefit Hinson, whose race he believes is trending in the Republican direction.
Thomas predicted that Hinson would ultimately prevail, citing her candidacy and the potential impact of the president's involvement as Election Day approaches.
His analysis highlighted the different campaign dynamics at work across Senate battlegrounds. In Texas, the challenge centers on candidate positioning and Republican turnout following a difficult primary. In Iowa, Thomas sees affordability and the economy as important issues that could shape voters' final decisions.
