Washington, D.C., February 19, 2026 — Appearing on Newsmax 2, Nestpoint Director of Government Affairs and Global Strategies Tim Phillips warned that proposed budget cuts and tax increases in New York City could have serious consequences for public safety, affordability, and quality of life.
The discussion centered on New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s proposed $122 billion budget for 2027, which includes cutting approximately $22 million from the NYPD and canceling thousands of previously approved police hires. Phillips emphasized that the scale of the proposed reductions would materially affect law enforcement capacity.
“That’s 5,000 fewer NYPD officers slated to be hired over the next several years,” Phillips said. “That matters when it comes to keeping Manhattan safe.”
Phillips argued that the proposed cuts would come at a time when the city is already facing visible public safety challenges, citing increased disorder in public spaces, subway safety concerns, and large-scale protests. He contrasted New York City’s spending trajectory with other states to underscore what he described as fiscal imbalance.
“New York City spends more money than the entire state of Florida,” Phillips noted, “despite having about 40 percent fewer people.”
The panel also discussed Mamdani’s proposal to raise taxes on wealthy residents and corporations to close the city’s budget gap, raising questions about whether such measures could accelerate population and capital flight — a trend already seen during and after the COVID period.
Later in the segment, Phillips addressed a separate incident in Florida involving the assault of a Trump supporter near the Trump International Golf Course. He linked the attack to what he described as increasingly aggressive political rhetoric.
“When people are constantly labeled as fascists or Nazis on television, it creates a permission structure in the minds of unstable individuals,” Phillips said. “That kind of language can normalize violence.”
Phillips warned that political leaders and media figures on both sides bear responsibility for de-escalating rhetoric, particularly at a time when political tensions are high nationwide.
